Understanding the Install Process

By now, you probably know what an Interlock Kit is (if you don’t, we have a host of other blogs about them that you can find on our website here). But there is one very important question to be answered once you know you need one; Can I install this myself, or do I need to hire a contractor? Our kits come with comprehensive install instructions (example seen below) but your answer to this question will depend on a few factors which we’ll get into later. First, we’ll go through the pros and cons of each approach.

DIY Installation Benefits

Some of the main benefits of doing your install yourself are as follows:

  • Cost savings on labor—potentially hundreds of dollars
  • Flexibility to work on your own timeline
  • Educational value for homeowners who enjoy hands-on projects
  • Online and over the phone support resources available, including video tutorials and customer service during business hours

Contractor Installation Benefits

Though getting a contractor to do the install will come with an extra price tag, it offers a variety of benefits with their experience:

  • Professional installers ensure everything is done to code and local regulations
  • Faster and often cleaner installation process
  • Helpful for homeowners uncomfortable working near the electrical panel
  • Professionals are more familiar with relocating and combing breakers to create space for a generator
  • Often includes warranty or service support for the installation

Deciding What’s Right for You

Deciding whether to hire an electrician or tackle the install yourself mostly comes down to your comfort level with high-voltage electrical work.

Installing the interlock kit onto the panel is fairly straightforward—especially if the generator breaker is already in place. The main caution is ensuring the power is shut off before removing the panel cover.

The more complex part comes when installing the generator inlet box and breaker, which requires running wires and working inside the panel—tasks best suited to someone with electrical experience. If you’re not confident, hiring a licensed electrician is the safer option.

If you choose to DIY, we’re here to help. Call us at (804)-726-2448 between 8:00 A.M.–4:30 P.M. EST or email Questions@Interlockkit.com—we respond quickly and are happy to assist.

Finding the Right Electrician

If you decide it is appropriate to have an electrician do the install, the Interlockkit Authorized Installer Program makes the process simple and reliable. Through this program, Interlockkit partners with licensed electricians across the country who are trained and approved to install their products according to code and safety standards. Homeowners can easily find a trusted professional in their area by using the convenient ZIP code search tool available on our website. This ensures peace of mind knowing that your generator interlock is installed correctly by a qualified expert.
