Product FAQ

What is a Generator Interlock Kit?

The original Interlock Kit is a NEC code compliant mechanical breaker lock-out product. Specifically designed for the purpose of preventing dangerous back-feeding scenarios after the power goes out and it is necessary to transfer away from the main power grid to a secondary power source, like a portable generator or solar battery.

Why you should Install our Interlock Kits

Our Interlock Kits can save you thousands of dollars. By utilizing an Interlock Kit, Inlet Box, and generator power cord combo, a person eliminates the danger of running power cords across the home to items individually. An added benefit is the accessibility Interlock Kits offer the panel operator. If you compare a manual transfer switch panel and an Interlock-Kit-Ready Panel, depending on the capabilities of one’s back-up power system, the Interlock Kit offers access to 2x-6x more breakers than a transfer switch panel! Using the Interlock Kit at your home or business will cut the cost of installing a generator or solar system in HALF or MORE guaranteed. That means more money back in your pocket this year!

What does an Interlock Kit look like?

Products are designed in AutoCAD and laser cut out of stainless steel. The Original Interlock Kit is the sturdiest Interlock Kit available today. Like and electrical panel, Interlock Kits change shape based on the breaker configuration that they must interact with. The design of the kit may change but the operational premise remains the same from kit to kit

  • The Interlock Kit consist of steel plates – a back plate that acts as a base and a front plate that acts as a slide, held together with binding posts and screws.
  • Our logo & certification for use with UL 67 is engraved on ALL kits to satisfy inspectors
  • Visit our shop page to view our Interlock Kit on an electrical panel

The Original Interlock Kit comes Tested for Use with all UL 67 Panelboards

We are proud to work with America’s premier testing entity for product safety approvals and regulatory certification of electrical products – www.metlabs.com

On a twice annual basis Interlock Kit tests products in the following areas:

  • Operational standards
  • Operational effectiveness
  • Code compliancy
All Interlock Kits manufactured with our logo meet NEC Code 702 in regards to the installation and operation of optional standby systems

How do I choose the correct Interlock Kit for my panel?

  • First Determine the manufacturer of your panel, by looking on the inside of the panel door at the manufacturer information. If no information is available use the breakers on the inside of the panel to help you determine the manufacturer
  • Determine the amperage of the main breaker
  • Determine the toggle throw direction of the main breaker: horizontal or vertical action
  • If there is a gap between the main breaker and branch circuits, measure how big the gap between the two points may be
  • Determine if the main breaker is centered, offset left, or offset right in the panel
    • If you cannot find a kit after gathering this information and using the website to find a match, reach out to our sales team who will be able to match or confirm the best kit for you. We are always happy to help.

How does an Interlock Kit work?

Your panel is a distribution and protection system for electricity in your home. Power is fed from the utility into the panel. From here it is run across the different circuit breakers and out into the rest of the home. The Interlock Kit allows you to safely transition from the utility feed to the back-up power source by sliding to interfere with either the MAIN or GEN/SOLAR breaker, forcing one breaker OFF while the other is operating.

  • The process for transitioning from grid power to a secondary power source is outlined below:
    • Turn main breaker to the OFF position
    • Turn all branch circuits to the OFF position (to not overload the generator while in a start-up phase
    • Slide Interlock Kit into the open position created by throwing the main breaker OFF
    • This will allow the secondary power source to be turned ON
    • The kit is now forcing the MAIN OFF and allowing the generator or solar battery to be ON
    • The kit is now forcing the MAIN OFF and allowing the generator or solar battery to be ON
      • WARNING: Allow appliances to start before engaging the next circuit

Do Interlock Kits carry a warranty?

All products listed and sold by Generator Interlock Technologies, LLC are covered by a satisfaction guarantee for 30 days or you will be refunded for the full amount of the products ordered, shipping charges not included in refund. After 30 days all sales are final. To receive full refund the product or products ordered must be returned and must be without altercation or damage not considered normal wear and tear as a result of use or installation. Any questions can be directed to Generator Interlock Technologies by using the contact information setup on this site.

What will a generator run once an Interlock Kit has been installed??

So, an Interlock Kit has been installed into the main distribution panel on site. The kit has turned the entire electrical panel into a transfer panel and is ready to operate. But which items can you run?

  • Start by adding up the wattage for necessary items in the home. Most household items have a wattage clearly listed on the nameplate. If only amperes and volts is given, just multiply: (10.2 amps x 120 volts = 1224 Watts). Note that is not a good idea to run a generator at full capacity. Do not run the generator at more than 80% capacity for more than 1 hour of operating time. Below are generalized amperages for common household items. (NOTE: check your appliances for an actual wattage number as they can vary from one to the next)
  • Electric Water Heater = 4500 Watts
  • Microwave = 1600
  • Toaster oven = 1800
  • Stove top = 2200
  • Hair dryer = 1500
  • Well pump = 2000
  • Basement sump-pump = 900
  • Refrigerator = 700
  • Freezer = 700
  • Furnace or boiler (gas, oil, propane) = 700

Make sure the generator can support all of the items that are necessary to run during an outage. A 7500-Watt generator would offer the ability to run almost anything in the home that would normally be ON – just not all at once. For example: the water heater could be run overnight while fewer items are necessities and then turned off in the morning after a shower when a person would most likely use a blow dryer and microwave to make breakfast.

How do you connect your generator to your generator breaker in the electrical panel

A qualified electrician would hard wire from the electrical panel, where a generator back-feed breaker is installed, over to a generator convenience outlet or receptacle. A generator power cord would then be plugged into the receptacle and ran over to the generator. Once the Interlock Kit is installed, the generator is ready to safely use!

  • How do I use the generator to feed my panel?

    Back Feed Breakers (generator breaker)

The back feed breaker is how the power from your generator gets into your panel and the breaker style must match the style of your panel. You can either order the amperage breaker that you need (check your generators owners manual) or just tell us the size of the generator you plan to use and we can match the size and style of the breaker for you.

Generally, people use a 30 amp back feed breaker and convenience outlet for generators up to 8,000 watts and a 50 amp back feed breaker and convenience outlet for larger units. For generators with outlets greater than 50 ampx, please consult the factory.

How do I create space in my electrical panel for a generator back-feed breaker If I need more space?

Back-feed generator breakers will need at least two breaker spaces in order to be installed and operated. That could be a problem if your breaker panel is full of breakers already. A tandem breaker also referred to as a “piggy-back breaker” helps to create space by consolidating two independent circuit breakers, into one breaker space. Tandem breakers will only take up one breaker space but will have two independent switches in that space, making it perfect for creating more space.

    • Note if you are removing single pole breakers to replace with tandem breakers, make sure that the amperages listed for the tandem breaker match the amperages of the original single-pole breakers. So, a if you removed two 15-amp items, a 15/15-amp tandem breaker would be necessary. If one single-pole was a 15 amp and the other was 20 amp, then a 15/20-amp tandem breaker would be the best breaker
    • Click here to view tandem breakers on the accessories page.
